Back-to-School Morning Routine Tips For the Whole Family
Even if you don’t have school aged children it’s rather apparent it’s back-to-school time in the United States. From the start of August to the start of September my news-feed flows with pictures of first days of new chapters. Just because you may not have a child going to school this time around, doesn’t mean you can’t jump on the trend of wanting to start a routine that will lead to a happy, healthier, better version of you! Oh and just because you “aren’t a people” doesn’t mean you can’t join in either.

Luckily one of the adults in the house makes sure she gets some time in the grass every morning ….
….and when things go extra smoothly the three of us take a 1 mile walk around the block. We all agree it keeps us much calmer and happier during the day and it just plain feels good!
 2. Involve your kids in caring for Fido (and for themselves).
Dogs, just like young kids, need role models. 57% of dog parents who also have human children involve their kids in caring for their pet—instilling responsibility and good daily habits like brushing their teeth and taking their vitamins.
I must admit I have always been a poor puppy parent in this department. Another lucky for us aspect is that my boyfriend grew up around dogs and totally loves them. Which leaves me time in the morning to sleep and then do my own routine of teeth brushing and vitamin taking. Haha! Oh and of course time for the whole family to snuggle and get extra morning kisses! The BEST part of waking up if you ask me.

Race Report : Hofbräuhaus Cleveland 5k

A week ago Dave, my sister and I went up to Cleveland for a lovely little 5K. I don’t recall when or how I heard about this event, but I saw it was reasonably priced, and came with great SWAG plus for some reason Dave had the day off from work so what was stopping us? We loaded into the car and headed out way early in the AM for us old peeps who sleep in all the time. ha.

Driving up Dave was cracking me up because he was complaining about it being cold. It was early and it was colder than the typical 90+ degrees we were used to suffering through, but it wasn’t any colder than he likes to keep the air, ya know? The event was taking place at a restaurant we knew well since it was directly next to the building we saw all our plays at over the last year. We parked and walked over for packet pick up. Immediately I saw my line had about 10-15 people in it (not bad) and his had maybe 1. Or that person could have been getting pins off the table who knows. I jokingly said he needs to hurry up and marry me so I can have a last name more conducive to race packet pick up.


The shock of the morning came when I picked up my stuff and my sister hadn’t picked up hers! WHOA since when do I beat anyone to an event? Very suspicious. Sadly it was suspicious because she wasn’t feeling well. ) ; Luckily she felt better before we actually started and ended up running a FANTASTIC race! Here I am mid sentence saying “Good Luck Sister” as we ran across the start. We all agreed to run our own race and meet up at the end.


The course itself was rather uneventful as many city 5Ks are to be honest. We ran about a mile to a mile and half down the main road (it was closed) and by the time we started it was hot as balls. By mid race it was about hell temperature and you don’t even want to know what it was when we finished. Haha. Mile one I was excited to see I made it in 14 minutes. Mind you that isn’t anything to really write home about, but when I have been not able to run at all and barely making 20+ minute miles a month ago, that 14 minute mile made my heart flutter (in a good way).

My personal goal was to run around 15 minute miles and finish around 45 mins at the end. I was on track but also very drained from the heat. I was somewhat heat acclimated from walking at break on lunch, but really no where near comfortable. We turn the corner and quickly turned again to run back parallel to the first street. At this intersection was water (YES) and the funniest thing all route. I heard this “pop” or “slam” noise and turned to look thinking a car hit a curb. Nope. Instead I saw a police officer half bent over the hood of the car (from the side, he wasn’t hit) and yelling “I TOLD YOU TO STOP”. I can only conclude the cop slammed his fist into the hood of the car. Haha. You go sir!

Freshly hydrated I tried to keep running, but by mile two I was exhausted! I believe I made it there in 32 minutes which wasn’t far from my goal, but was quite a bit longer for this mile than the first. The rest of the race I death walk/jogged with a BUNCH of other people, and we all just smiled and cheered as the 10K option crowd zoomed past glistening in the sun from their sweat.

I did manage to run again at the end when I KNEW it was the end AND it was downhill. I crossed the finish line according to my watch just around 50 minutes and official time says around 49 minutes! Number 87 of 96 in my age group ( ; I was VERY proud of myself and truly think it showcases just how far I’ve come in the last month of my diet and exercise. Dave was about 3 minutes faster than me and Becky was about 3 minutes faster than him. We all easily caught up at the end and got in line for our free bratwurst, beer, and souvenir glass. Oh and of course we have finisher medals!


The three of us sat outside for about an hour talking and listening to the outside band. I thought the inside was closed, but apparently we missed quite the party judging by these event photos!

The only bad part about this race (IMHO) was the heat and whatcha gonna do about that in NE Ohio in August? I will most certainly consider doing this race again next year and hope a lot more friends can join in too!

Race Report : The Great Inflatable Race

Hello again! Moving right along if you read these in order, is my race report for the weekend after I did the night time 5K with Dave. On Saturday July 9th my sister and my friend joined me for what was supposed to be an amazing bouncing castle 5K. I wrote that weirdly, because it DID end up being that, although I had a lot on my mind.

See, I didn’t do well with turning 32 this year. I may have mentioned it in a previous post (or not) but for some reason I was feeling very not in control of my own life and my own choices. Most of all I was feeling totally out of control with my body. I didn’t want to take pictures, I didn’t want to smile, I felt fat and I felt gross, because quite simply I was. For me “fat” isn’t a weight, it’s a feeling. A size 2 can feel fat just as much as a size 22 or size 42. Saturday the 9th I was unhappy. Monday the 11th I started my diet and exercise program and 5 weeks later I am down 16 pounds so I guess I can say at least I did something about it. As for the rest of my complaints, I did something about them too!

On to the race. Becky and Liz picked me up at some terrible time in the morning haha and we all rode up to Cleveland. The race was held at Victory Park which I have never heard of, but clearly is home to many soccer fields. When we arrived we could see all the inflatables in the field in a big circle. Side note, I guess there’s another race with a similar name, but with 5K in the title. This one is called “race” and it isn’t always a 5K, the Cleveland version however was, lucky us? Haha.


After checking in we waited FOREVER in line to start. I think they tried to space everyone out, but we were still on top of each other at different obstacles and there was one section of JUST walking before the finale, but people figured out it was a loop and cut the course short. I don’t really blame them, especially if they had smaller children. The first obstacle I stepped up on and went SPLAT on my face. You can see it behind us in the pics, it’s blue and green, shaped like a shoe and the image inflatable for the logo. I have no core strength or balance so naturally I was awesome at all these inflatables haha. I wiggled my way up the side and down the slide before spilling out into the grass and losing my hat. I was laughing and sweating. This was no bouncy castle, it was WORK, but it was fun!

The last one was the only one I skipped. That thing was MASSIVELY high in person and there was a steep slide on the other side as the finish. I don’t do heights. There were a few others I was up on top and went to slide down and my heart skipped a beat and this was probably about 2x as high as any of those. Becky and Liz went down and Becky admitted the height even got to her so I’m glad I chickened out!

At the end of it all I was glad to be done. I wondered if I was in “better” shape if I would like it more. I spent a lot of time crawling whenever I’d lose my balance. I also wonder if I knew it was going to be “work” and not just bouncing if I would have had more fun? Not saying I didn’t have fun, don’t get me wrong, but I think people should be prepared for a work out when they go! I honestly would like to do it again next year if the opportunity presents itself and with any luck I can give you a proper comparison.

In grand conclusion though….Thanks for the bday gift sister! I really am glad we went!
