Friday Food : Homemade Egg Nog

What better way to celebrate the season than with a traditional holiday beverage….egg nog!? I know when I was growing up, getting to drink egg nog at Christmas time was a huge treat. Something I waited and looked forward to for months at a time. The last few years I wasn’t able to take part in it all since most dairy products are made with lower fat ingredients meaning there’s vitamin a palmitate added. Finally I sat down and looked up different recipe ideas and then experimented on my own to find a combination I liked. Yes, this one is spiced, if that’s not for you cut back on the amounts or types used. Feel free to serve as-is or add a little whipped cream to the top. Some of my fellow adults may also want to add alcohol, to each their own!

Egg Nog

Homemade Egg Nog

What you will need:

  • 4-6 egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups cream (not whipped cream, regular cream)
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 and 2 teaspoons vanilla


  1. In a large bowl beat together the eggs and sugar until fluffy. (Note: if you think eggs and sugar can’t get fluffy, then you haven’t been beating them long enough…keep going)
  2. In a saucepan heat the milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla and cinnamon for 5 minutes
  3. Whisk the hot milk mixture slowly into the egg mixture
  4. Pour all back into the saucepan and cook on low to medium heat for 3 minutes, until everything is thick…do NOT boil
  5. Remove and refrigerate for 1 hour
  6. Add cream, nutmeg and another 2 teaspoons of vanilla, then refrigerate overnight
  7. Serve as-is, add whipped cream, or your own creation. This is also when you would add alcohol if desired
