Friday Food: Shamrock Smoothie

Hello everyone! Welcome to MARCH. I am so excited for this month because I may only be 25% Irish, but it is my favorite part of my heritage. I long for red hair (only have undertones), embrace my pale skin and freckles, love the color green and my favorite trip so far was easily the time spent in Ireland. I miss my Claddagh ring and I am a proud kisser of the Blarney stone.

In my way of embracing the month of green, I have whipped up a healthy alternative to the classic cult favorite the Shamrock Shake. Using all healthy ingredients (aside from the optional whipped cream and sprinkles) I present…

The Shamrock Smoothie

Shamrock Smoothie

What you will need:

  • 1-2 bananas
  • 1 cup yogurt (try Chobani Non-fat Vanilla)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 5-6 ice cubes
  • 1-2 teaspoons McCormick mint (or peppermint) extract
  • green food coloring
  • optional: whipped cream, cherries, green sprinkles

Directions:

  1. Place bananas, yogurt, milk, ice, extract and food coloring in a blender (my Ninja had no issues making this concoction).
  2. Once well blended pour into 2-4 glasses and top with optional whipped cream, cherries, and/or sprinkles
  3. Enjoy

Comments:

I pre-crushed my ice in a gallon freezer bag then used setting level 1 on my Ninja Blender. See your guide for the best results from your equipment.

If you can’t find or don’t like vanilla yogurt, use plain and add vanilla extract.

This is in no way meant to be a copy-cat recipe. IMHO you can’t recreate a rich ice cream treat using yogurt, but you can make something special all on its own.

I’ll admit, my smoothie had a taste of banana to it, but I like banana and I notice it easily. I’m sure if you wanted to avoid it, you could make a smoothie using just ice, milk, and yogurt.

What’s the difference between mint and peppermint? Which should you use? Well, technically speaking, peppermint is just that, peppermint. Mint is a mix of both peppermint and spearmint  Still doesn’t help? Think of Star Brite candies (after-dinner mints) do you like the red spirals or the green? Yes, some red is cinnamon, but for the most part the reds are peppermint, the greens are spearmint. Candy-canes or green tin Altoids? Pick your passion and add that type to your smoothie.

Feedback: What do you think of my twist on this treat? Do you ever try to find healthy versions of the snacks you love?
