The Best Gift to Give or Receive

This isn’t a semi wordless Wednesday, but it is a shorter post.

I don’t care what anyone else says this holiday season or when birthdays or other special events roll around. There is always one gift to give that will top everything else each and every time. A gift you can keep giving and you don’t need an excuse like a special event either…

Look at or think about your loved ones, human or furry, and think about the moments you spend with them each day. Sure there are always going to be distractions. Work. Blogs. TV. Food. I’m not saying every moment needs to be taken to the extreme.

This holiday season, find $1-$10 and buy yourself some paper, a pen, and envelopes at the dollar store. Buy some stamps and sit down and write letters. Write a letter to your friend who lives far away and share a story about the best day you ever spent together. Tell them a joke, or about your favorite vacation spot. Email is nice, but the almost human touch and connection of touching a letter someone crafted for you is irreplaceable.

Write a letter to a friend or family who lives in town and invite them over. Invite them for a walk. Give them the chance to talk and give yourself permission to listen. Feel the moment between you and don’t let yesterday or tomorrow interrupt what is happening now.

Hug your family. Hug your friends. Hug everyone. Look someone in the eyes and tell them…”YOU matter to ME”. Realize somewhere out there, you matter to someone too.

Think about all those pretty objects in your house. Are they special because of their sticker value? Or are they special because of their stories? We are all special because of our stories and the people who created them with us.

Happy Holidays.
