Well for those of you who have been living under a rock…today is National Running Day. What are the reasons you chose, choose or will choose to run? For me, it is a constant stream of various motivations, desires, memories, or goals. I started my adult journey of learning to love running again when I stepped foot onto the track for Relay for Life in 2007. Five years later I am a different person, a better person for challenging myself in new ways every day.
Often I forget what it was like when I first started. I get hung up on breaking current records or excelling at some arbitrary standard. More often I need to stop and remember how great it felt the first time I ran a solid mile. How great it felt the first time that mile wasn’t greater than 10 minutes. Remember the pride when I ran a solid 5K and the fear of entering a half marathon.
Running is more than a performance sport. It is more than words on paper or the motion in the streets or among the trees. Running is something in my heart. Although my body may not always translate the words properly, the message is always pure.
Go out and celebrate National Running Day. Maybe with your own run? Maybe by smiling at a runner passing by on your route. Maybe by reflecting on your own source of passion.
