Moving Day

Can you believe it? Are you sick of hearing about it? Well too bad and luckily…Today is moving day!! Eiiip. Mom and I have been moving since Friday as I mentioned, but now is the last of it all. What have we accomplished and why is it taking so long?

Friday: We moved a ton of boxes of my clothes, sheets, towels and other such items. We moved countless boxes of decorations and other basement type storage. Brittany came over and we chatted for a while before loading the truck (I hadn’t seen her in almost 10 years, so we’re allowed). We managed to get the computer desk, my lay-z-boy, a chair, my couch, the twin bed and my bike over with her help. OH Mom and I also moved my table and chairs, nearly all my dishes and a few storage pieces for the kitchen.

Friday night I went to my sister’s for the the Haunted House and taco fun. It was nice to see her friends, they have all been together since the single digit years so these other two girls are like other sisters to me. The HH wasn’t too scary, they were having a special where you could go through 2x for the same night. We decided once was enough. I got the impression from the way some halls looked and were sans monsters, maybe it was “everyone call off night” so they were doing the 2fer deal.

At the start the lady said “Don’t touch the monsters and the monsters won’t touch you”.

So I asked her “Can we touch each other?”

To which the girls laughed and the woman looked me like I was crazy and said “Do whatever you need to do”.

Saturday: In the morning I dressed and was out the door to Toastmasters. I wore my pink/black suit/dress with the suit jacket and on my way out the door I realized all my shoes were at my new place! So I had to race over there to get my heels. Sheesh. I don’t have pictures, because in all the chaos of trying to end the contest and start their officer meeting I didn’t have a chance to grab my camera. I was one of four area winner for the Table Topics contest. OK I was replacing a winner, I was 2nd place, and I think I let that get to me too much. I was also scattered from all the things happening in my life. I drew 4th speaker again. Ugg. And out into the hall we went. My topic was procrastination and while I gave a clean and functional speech, the entire time I felt disengaged from my audience and lacking spark. They only did places 1 & 2, not even participation certificates! I did not land either spot. It was disappointing, but all in all it’s been a fun time.

After the contest Mom and I moved more things to the house. This time we bought blinds so people wouldn’t creep around my windows. More clothes, pots & pans, all bathroom items. I was home packing more boxes when I realized it was time for my friend’s murder mystery party. So I quickly changes, leaving boxes half packed and shot out the door. The hand meatloaf was a large success! Not only did it look great, but it was yummy too. The MM game itself seemed to drag on for me. I think this is because few people really got “into” their character and some of the guests were confused until mostly through it anyway. She wants to do another in the spring with a smaller casts, I think that will be fun. Another friend of mine was there who recently moved too so we were sympathizing with each other on how much it sucks. When I got home Mom and I made another trip to my place in the dark. Ohhhhhh. She had put some more stuff up for me (awesome!). It’s crazy how one person can fill a 2 bedroom apartment + basement. I was worried about it being too small? I have NO IDEA where all my stuff went, but it’s in there and this place is still very roomy. Gawd I love it!! I could totally fit an L couch when I have the dollars and cents.

This brings us to today. What the crap could possibly be left? I have 2 dressers downstairs, my headboard and about 2 boxes of clothes and basement storage. I have probably about a box and a half of stuff scattered around the main floor (including my computer and XBOX). Upstairs I have my queen bed and main dresser, two book cases with books (wait no, one if all work books, they’re staying here until I’m settled into the office, no need to move them twice) and a few items remain in my closet. Like 1 small box worth. I need to figure out what to do with all the stuff on my walls. I don’t think my childhood posters need to come with me, but it’s so sad to tear them down. Oh well…I’m sick of this moving junk. I’m sore and le tired.

Tom should be here anywhere from 16 minutes ago to 14 minutes from now. He may bring some more of our guy friends with him for slave labor. Nooo I’m feeding them so it’s not that bad. Hopefully he does and we can hit it and quit it. Then I won’t be all stressed immediately before going to bed and working. After we move I have to go grocery shopping. Fun. I am also finishing laundry at Mom’s house.

Over the next week I will unpack and make import calls. Such as paying for my teeth, switching utilities, getting renter’s insurance and having internet set up.

Onward and upward!

Friday Food : Meatloaf Hand + Potatoes

Not too long ago, Beth @ Shut Up and Run posted a favorite things type list including “Creepiest Halloween Food“. Following her links and links after that and as far into the rabbit hole as I could get I landed at Not Martha and her journey of creating a meat hand for Halloween. Luckily she did all the base work so I knew generally what I wanted to do. There isn’t a link to the actual recipes for the meat and potatoes, because I have modified things over time to create something of my own.

Meatloaf Hand and Potatoes

  • light color cheese of preference ( I used Swiss)
  • 1 white onion (optional)

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 2 eggs
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs

  • red or baking potatoes
  • salt

For the glaze :

  1. Combine, ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce in a bowl until well blended.

For the meatloaf :

  1. Combine ground beef, egg, salt and pepper in a bowl.
  2. Add in bread crumbs, thickening to preference.
  3. Using your preferred surface (counter, cutting board, wax paper) mold mixture to the shape of a hand. (In mine I made my “fingers” too short and thick, for a better look I would suggest more length). To prevent fingers from being too thin or flimsy, keep a webbing between them. This can be covered later with the potatoes.
  4. Place meatloaf hand on/in baking dish.
  5. Cover hand with the glaze mixture.
  6. Next cover with cheese. Careful not to make the slices too thick or it will run off and pool between the fingers. If you want, cut slices of onion for the tips of the fingers (“nails”) also place a larger slice at the edge of the hand for a “wrist bone”
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

For the potatoes:

  1. Peel and chop potatoes into cubes. I only used 2 potatoes and do not think there was enough to cover/surround hand.
  2. Place cubes in boiling water and cook until softened, careful not to over boil.
  3. Drain potatoes and place in a large mixing bowl.
  4. Mash until large pieces have been broken up.
  5. Add salt to flavor. (Again as I made this for a party, I made them quite plain. When served people will add butter/cream/whatever to taste as well).
  6. Pour potatoes onto a large serving platter or deep dish.
  7. When meatloaf is finished place on top of potatoes and form around fingers for a more defined look.

2 pounds of meat should create 2 hands. I only needed one hand since I’m going to a potluck so I used half the recipe.

Serve and creep out/delight your Halloween guests!

Marvin K ROJ

As many of you may or may not have heard…I am moving this weekend.

So what does that have to do with my title? Well, at 27 years young my Mom is essentially saying “I will throw you out”. She has been cracking herself up calling me Marvin K Mooney (the book character) saying “The time has come. The time is NOW. Marvin K Mooney, will you please go now”. And other such tidbits of warm fuzzys. **All images from a general Google search.

I laugh too, because I agree. It wasn’t my dream to be unemployed and living in her house this past birthday. It wasn’t my dream to still be in school at this point in my life. If things had been what I thought they were at 18, well I’d be married working at some hot shot business wearing power-suits.

I’m glad things worked out the way they did. Being a counselor may not pay well, but I never pictured myself a happy adult. I pictured myself stressed, and having lots of money to play with, but not happy. I figured that’s what being an adult was, responsibility and daily complaints. Yes, there will be bad days at the office, but to know the difference I could be making, not just in one person’s life but all the lives they touch. It’s OK to have to budget my groceries.

Back to the moving…I mentioned it before, but it is nearly official…the apartment/duplex is mine! Tonight I meet with my future landlord to go over the lease and acquire the keys to the kingdom. I couldn’t be more excited, well yes I could. If there was a such a thing as a fairy godmother who packs and unpacks all your stuff for you…then I’d be more excited.

What am I getting from my winning showcase? A NEW CAR. Haha Nope. I am getting (starting with the outside) a reasonably sized front yard with a few trees. A drive way that could comfortably fit 3 cars. A back yard that is HUGE and mostly fenced in. My side has a gate, the other side does not and it’s an open area. (Moving to the inside) I have on the main floor, a living room and a kitchen/dining area. I say “slash” but it’s not small at all. It’s a really big area where half is the cooking/prep area the other half is for my tables and chairs. Big enough to comfortably have my table set up with all 4 chairs and leaves in the table. Normally I’ll just have it set as a small table though since it’ll just be me and Em and she doesn’t need a chair. Living room I feel is a tad small, but really if it fits my TV, couch and chair (possibly desk) what else do I need? I AM bummed it’s probably too small for an L-couch, but that forces me to save $$. Taking the steps down you will find a half finished basement AKA Emily’s room. And the area for storage/laundry, yes I have washer/dryer hook ups. Taking the steps up you will find the bathroom, my master bedroom and a secondary bedroom. Not too shabby, huh?

Not to worry though, tomorrow’s Friday Food will be posted. And I have things planned for the next few days/the week, but I also have back up entries in case life gets too hectic. However I don’t know how long I’ll be without Internet after the weekend and I don’t know how much I want to use my new office as a personal blogging location. Will it take longer than a week to install? Let’s hope not!

My Mom and I have been busy packing and cleaning the house preparing for the move. Tomorrow we start moving things over that we can lift/carry. Mostly boxes and smaller furniture. As in the kitchen will be finished. LOL. I have a friend from HS I recently got back in touch with (she was in the service for a while) who is also a fellow runner! Woot! Who has offered to come up and help some too on Friday. That night I am going over to my sister’s for tacos and a trip to a haunted house *cue creepy sounds*

Sat morning I have a speech contest, followed by a Halloween/Murder Mystery party that afternoon & Evening. Friday Food actually will feature items I am making for this party.

Sunday is the “official” extravaganza. My BFF Tom is bringing his farm boy muscles and truck to help the cause. My sister is bringing her boyfriend and his giant van. I would think if all goes well and just the major heavy bulky stuff remains, somehow the 5 of us will get it into my place.

On a different note. Going through things has brought back many memories…and many sneezes. Darn you allergies and asthma! It’s interesting to suddenly flash back to various points in my life. Finding the silk I stained for JCL, that took me hours and I thought it was the greatest piece of art ever created…finding it stuffed on a shelf behind some boxes and near a drain pipe, badly discolored, faded and smelling of who knows what. The 2 million shirts from HS where I was involved with everything under the sun. I snapped pictures of a bunch of the shirts, and they were all donated. At one point they were such a strong part of my identity I couldn’t imagine parting with them. I don’t think I’ll ever forget my experiences though, and closets only hold so much. Sure I could ask Mom to hold on to some items, but really? When I do get my own house with my own storage I plan to have children, and then their memories they can’t bear to part with will be the priority.

I found clothes I forgot I owned. A size XL sweater, a sweater I thought was so beautiful and I had to have it…and even at XL it didn’t fit very well. To remember how far I’ve come with my weight. I won’t say health because I still have far to go, but to not be so hard on myself. Uniform upon uniform upon uniform. What to do with all those uniforms? Countless old toys, I already know those will be donated. I am keeping my giraffes and Beanie Babies, but all the other stuff? Headed to new homes with children that will love them. Did you learn anything from Toy Story 3?

Of course I will take pictures and I will be so glad to sit down and relax Sunday afternoon. Wish me luck (or something) let the games begin (or something).

How often have you moved? What’s your favorite part? Least favorite part? What’s the strangest thing you have ever found during a move?
