Review: McDonald’s Fruit & Maple Oatmeal

There is something everyone probably knows about me, and I am willing to admit it to myself as well. I am a food freak. I love to eat out. I love to cook. I just enjoy food to an extreme level. When something is new or noteworthy I give it a try, because it’s a built in excuse.

Recently I decided to treat myself to the new Fruit & Maple Oatmeal at McDonald’s. According to their website the oatmeal looks like:

If you do an image search you will find a few other reviews, and they show pictures of items which are MUCH runnier, and have very few things that resemble fruit. I’m not going to borrow those images, because the oatmeal I bought was beautiful and delicious looking. Much like the above image, sans white ceramic bowl. One reason there is a change in presentation may be because of the way it’s prepared. Of course this isn’t created on site totally from scratch, it’s basically instant oatmeal. From several accounts I have read it’s brought out in a paper cup and water is added the same way tea is created. Then a package of fruit is opened and dumped into the cup. The server stirs everything and presents it to the customer. Personally, I did not see mine being prepared. I was in the drive-thru. However, as anyone who has made instant oatmeal at home knows, adding too little or too much water greatly influences the consistency.

The oatmeal I ate was a perfect mixture, not too runny and not too thick. When I looked down the whole top was covered in fruit. The fruit involved two types of apples (red and green) two types of raisins (normal and golden) and cranberries. Each type of fruit was totally obvious to me and did not taste fake or freeze-dried the way some instant stuff does. Oatmeal I’ve had in the past had apples in it, but I only knew it was apples from the package, these I could name without being told.

Many sites online show the price as $1.99 (American), I think this is a fair price. When I bought mine, it was $2.29. It wasn’t the best deal and really I am not sure why it’s 30 cents more, but I won’t skip it in the future because of this…but it if goes up to $2.50 I just might. Or I’ll complain.
Before I get into too many more details I’d like to share the advertised nutrition facts.

And here are the listed ingredients for the oatmeal.

Oatmeal: Whole grain rolled oats, brown sugar, food starch-modified, salt, natural flavor (plant source), barley malt extract, caramel color.
Oatmeal without Brown Sugar: Whole grain rolled oats, food starch-modified, maltodextrin, natural flavor (plant source), barley malt extract, caramel color.

I believe the version I bought did not have the added brown sugar…if it did, I could not taste it at all! Other things I read online said some stores also offer cream…not gonna lie, I’d probably go for some cream once in a while. Before everyone freaks out about how instant oatmeal is bad for you or it’s better to eat at home and other such statements…I agree with you! Eating at home and fresh made food is fabulous…I don’t have the time, or more so the desire to prepare my food at home. I search for quick and easy options because I am lazy. It’s that simple. Oatmeal trumps greasy, fattening McMuffin or similar food.

My favorite part of the oatmeal? It kept all day. See I have this issue at work where I don’t always have time to sit down and eat. So, I take bites of food all day long. NOTHING drives me more crazy with breakfast food, then how different it tastes as time passes. I am aware food isn’t created to last for hours on end, but it SHOULD! IMHO. I placed the oatmeal hot and smooth on my desk early in the morning. Throughout the day it lost its temperature, but nothing else. It did not get lumpy, it did not get runny, and it did not start tasting gross as items change from food to questionable. At 3:00 I finally finished my food and it was just as good as when I started.

Now, I was planning on doing this long drown out analysis of how much it would cost to create this dish for yourself. Let’s be honest though, there are too many variables and did you read the last few paragraphs? I’m LAZY. I can tell you while at the grocery store tonight I did notice boxes of regular and golden raisins; they were about 4 bucks each. And I know cranberries are often more. Different areas sell different sizes of items though and different brands also change the range. Basically, if you LOVE oatmeal and you want to create your own and you like to store things you made and you need more than what they offer in the fruit department, then yea shopping is your better bet in the long run. However, if you’re like me and you just want oatmeal every once in a while and you want more than the small bits of fruit offered in typical instant this is a good option.

On a final note, if you want in on the gossip of the world…VT Maple farmers had a huge uproar with McDonald’s. The maple in the oatmeal is not real (SHOCK! AMAZEMENT!) this violated VT state laws. If you want to read more about check out this site (a part of CNN) and snoop around.

Let’s just get this out of the way. I barely worked out this week. I know it’s important, but I needed to take a small step back with all the stuff I had coming at me, plus I decided to be social.

Sunday I went out with Liz and did some ice skating. I wish I tried to do so more often, it’s fun but took me much too long to find my groove. After we went to eat some Chinese food.

Monday I managed to do 90 mins on the ellip (my one “accomplishment” of the week).

Tuesday I went to Toastmasters

Wednesday had dinner with Tom and went to see The Black Swan…I loved it!!

Thursday (now) I have no justification for skipping…other than I want a bubble bath and to be lazy

Tomorrow I could work out, maybe I will. I also have been going to bed around 10 (lame) but the extra sleep and casual evenings have really helped me get through this week. No tears! Haha. The bad thing? I ran out of asthma meds, they’re not here yet (grr) so the lack of breathing is really hurting my sleep and the tiredness makes me not wanna work out.

An added bonus? My unemployment was approved! HUGE HUGE stress relief. Now to roll my 401K into an IRA and get health insurance. ALSO bonus-wise…my new internship class will NOT prevent me from graduating if I don’t have a perfect 50/50 split of 1 on 1 and group hours. SO finally and officially (haha) I WILL WILL WILL graduate in May.

SUCH a great week….except for the slacking.

Here are some jokes to help you have a good week too

The Remote

The wife and I were at home watching TV. I had the remote and was switching back and forth between a fishing channel and the porn channel. She became more and more annoyed and finally said: “For God’s sake! Leave it on the porn channel! You already know how to fish!”

Dan was a single guy living at home with his father and working in the family business. When he found out he was going to inherit a fortune when his sickly father died, he decided he needed to find a wife with whom to share his fortune. One evening, at an investment meeting, he spotted the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. Her natural beauty took his breath away.

“I may look like just an ordinary guy,” he said to her,”But in just a few years my father will die and I will inherit $200 million”.

“Impressed, the woman asked for his business card and three days later, she became his stepmother.

Women are so much better at financial planning than men.

Baby I’m a rockstar

So I had another awesome week of working out! According to Cardio Trainer I have burned over 5,000 cals this month! Go me! Now as long as my ass gets the memo. No no. I was actually thinking about this leaving the gym the other night. I like just about every part of my body…yes I like to look at myself in the mirror. Not sure if you’ve noticed but I’m rather darn cute! So anyway…there are two parts of my body I don’t like. 1) My lower tummy (the pouch area) 2) Directly below my butt where my legs start…I swear it’s all cellulite-y. Maybe I’m crazy. Everything else is between OK to awesome.

OK so after Run for Regis here is what the other days involved…

Mon: I couldn’t walk. Here is my very talented picture of myself and where it hurt. It ONLY hurt on the outside of my legs…is that an area?

Untitled (2)

The outside of between shins and calves? Shrug. So I skipped working out. Also I had food poisoning or something…not pretty.

Tues: This morning I had a little “issue”. All I’ll say is there is an issue chicks deal with that dudes do not. So that night I got on the ellip for what I thought was 30 mins. I started watching Law & Order and thought it was only 30 mins long, an hour later and still feeling like I had food poisoning…I was done! After I went to Toastmasters.

Wed: I went to the gym and despite the issue…I did water aerobics. It was another awesome experience. A lot more people my age too. One girl in the lockerroom even asked me about the class and said I made it sound so great she was going to try it some time. They should PAY me for that referral! Kidding.

Thurs: Did the spinning class, got there early for some extra miles. 22 miles 66 minutes. We did a lot of jumps, which I do not like. BUT I was a big girl and I adjusted my stuff correctly and I hate to admit it, but it worked better (grumble). I certainly liked this instructor’s style a lot more. I’m thinking of doing the pool Mon and Wed then spinning Tues and Thurs. Starting in Feb I add on another class after each of them…as much as I can.

Now it is Friday and a rest day. Rest day also means nice hot bath day. I went to training for de-escalation training for work. It was OK, if not actually a waste of time. I don’t think I like the training this center offers. I probably won’t go to anymore unless forced. Topic was great, but the place was FREEZING.

Oh and I leave you with a music video. We heard this song during spinning, during a really rough section and there was just something about the undertone of it that made me wanna push through.

How is everyone else doing with their fitness? I feel great about it and it’s helping me stay stress free at work…OK stress reduced.
