On Saturday morning Tom and I awoke and traveled to Howe Meadow special events field to do the yearly Summit Tour Of Metro Parks (STOMP) this was my third year doing this noncompetitive ride and my one and only goal was to not walk any of the hills. This thing should be called the Summit Tour Of Who the hell put that hill there? But STOWTHPTHL just doesn’t roll off the tongue as nicely.
Each year the route is a little different which makes going back again and again more fun. We started on the towpath trail slightly before joining a regular road. My main complaint about this ride is how much is on normal roads, and only two rest stops for the parks. Personally I don’t need more stops, however I think it would be nice if they had one maybe two more if only for water for some people and just as a way to say ‘Here is another park and it’s lovely” I mean who go RIGHT past Deep Lock Quarry there seems to be no reason there can’t be a quick loop into the parking lot.
Anyway. The first rest stop was at Furnace Run, I took a pic of the lake. The theme for this one was advertising for First Night in Akron. In the past there has been a Greek theme with togas and grapes or a Hawaii type theme with limbo. This was slightly disappointing. I put a sparkly purple flower press-on tattoo on my arm and we were off not too long after.
With a little more struggle we got up several other hills and found ourselves at Camp Christopher, the next point, sooner than we planned. We didn’t stay long since we didn’t feel like we needed to and only had about 6 miles to the end and a great picnic lunch. We made it down to the end and I was hoping to be within 2.5 hours and we were about 2 or 3 minutes over that so not really a big deal at all. Especially since I think some of the rest stops were not calculated into the distance because their map said it was 24.9 and my Garmin says it was closer to 26 and I DID stop it at some of the rests. Weird.
Picnic was nice, not as many people stuck around as I remembered in the past. It seemed there were fewer booths too. Oh well, it’s the economy. Tom had to get back home so we gathered his stuff and I made a quick stop at Vertical Runner for some new types of beans and we parted ways.
Oh and I DID stay on the bike the WHOLE time, guess I’ll need a new goal in 2010.
