Labor Day 1-mile and 5K

First up…the 1-milerI decided to try and give it my all for this 1 mile. I knew I would feel silly if I got hurt or whatever before the 5k but I really wanted to see what I could do. Unfortunately there were so many kids it was impossible to really get grooving. I hit the turn around at 4:15 and thought I was hearing things, but felt my legs start to give in on my way back to the finish. I was pleased with my sub 9 mile, but I’ll be more please when it gets even lower than that someday.

I managed to take 3rd place in the 20+ age group (woot woot) and heard some VERY cute quotes from the kids.


Kid 1: Ohmigosh I have never run a mile this is hard, have you?

Kid 2: No. But my Dad has run a whole mile before, he does it for his running.


Kid (while walking next to his friend and touching his shoulder): It’s okay if you need to walk a little bit. My Mom does it all the time. She jogs for 4 minutes than walks, and she’s real good.

How can you NOT love our sport when you get to hear things like that??

Next up…the 5kOk so after my accomplishment of the 1 mile. It was time fr the normal 5K portion of the program. I knew starting out I wasn’t going to be amazing, but I also hoped I still could. About a half mile into it I knew I was a jackass in the one miler and had not drank enough water and my left calf was twitching and making my whole leg shake to the point where I almost tripped a few times. Going up the slight hills hurt like a mother too. I made it to mile one and felt like I was barely putting anything into it and when I heard them say 10:15 I knew this was not too good for a 5K. I LOVE holiday theme races because people are in good moods, hate them because non-runners come out and non-runners think it’s okay to walk/run three to four people across on a narrow path. I had to wiggle through tiny cracks and openings to find a comfy place to move my legs. As you can see from the charts I pulled negative splits the rest of the time, and I don’t think I would have done anything better than maybe 30 seconds shorter overall so no tears shed, especially at the end there was a narrow chute and I wasn’t about to push the lady next to me (who was probably like in her 60s or 70s). I loved coming in at the end though, because I told myself instead of thinking how mad you are that you’re not getting a sub 30 think of how GREAT and STRONG and BEAUTIFUL you feel and just have fun. And wouldn’t you know it? I did feel all those things and I did get a little kick at the end and I was really happy and feeling great at the end. So it was still a nice day.

The course is about lap and half around the lake for this park and it’s a nice basically flat course and afterward we all eat too many pancakes and sausage and scream and dodge all the bees. (ha). The guy who makes pancakes flips them off the grill into the air and magically onto your plate…breakfast and a show.

I saw Frank’s friends Steve and Mark, who didn’t seem as pleased to meet me as I was to meet them, but oh well at least I finally said “hello”. Shawn was there and didn’t make fun of me, in fact he said I looked good….maybe he wasn’t feeling well? LoL. In line for food we were talking about doing different races in our lifetimes and he says “Well you’re not getting any younger or faster” and I say to him “I am too getting faster you d*ick” lol aren’t we so loving to our friends/ each other?
